Well the popular sentiment is, you're lucky if you've never had to go through that type of situation. When it does happen, and your adrenaline starts surging, everything becomes so surreal and suddenly everything seems to speed up to the point where you feel like you're only barely able to catch up.
I would know. Plus I know people who felt that same way when they were forced into those circumstances; especially when it was their first time. However, I know of a couple of buddies who can stay exceptionally calm, but that's not to say their totally docile. If you've ever seen the Bourne movies, you'll know what I mean by exceptionally calm, and yet deadly. And that characterizes Jason Bourne, cold, cunning, brutal, yet in a manner that doesn't cause him to lose total control of himself or lose focus.
Yes I know it's just a movie, but the thing to remember is that Matt Damon was trained for months on end by real combat intructors who knew their shit. The moves which Damon and any of this on screen opponents executed were real and with no stunt doubles.
