Hello Everyone,
I was asked to post this,if you want to look at it in detail everything can be downloaded from:

Practical Exercise - New Research?
I looked at Letters and Sounds: principle and practice of high quality phonics, National strategy, Department for education and skills, crown copyright 2007.
This programme is based on research carried out in the U.K. written up in the Rose report; Independent Review of the teaching of early reading, Final Report Jim Rose, 2006. Department for education and skills, crown copyright 2006.
The research took place within the United Kingdom and was a comprehensive review of the teaching of reading and spelling within the early years.
The programme refers directly to the review of early reading conducted by Jim Rose, stating that ‘high quality phonic work’ should be the prime means for teaching children how to read and spell words. They state that Letters and Sounds is a high quality phonics resource which encapsulates the reading review recommendations, meets our published core criteria which define a high quality phonics programme, and takes account of the best practice seen in our most successful early years settings and schools.
The programme shows that it that this research has been used in its choice of language, method of teaching and very structured order in which the phonemes are introduced.
The programme is divided into 6 phases, the first of which is all about learning to listen and making it fun for very young children to get ready for more formalised learning.
The programme has a very clear rationale and has a clear progressive structure, with a stress on moving at the speed of the child not forcing them along the programme before they are ready to move on.
The programme also stresses that it is important to follow the progression of sounds even when supplementing the programme with other sources.
The programme does not have its own set of levelled reading books; it does however provide captions and sentences as the programme progresses, worksheets or word cards etc.
Many of the necessary resources directly linked into the Letters and Sounds programme are available as a free downloads from www.sparklebox.co.uk enabling the schools to build their own resources at a lower cost than many of the other schemes. These resources are colourful being designed for the target audience of Key stage 1 children.
It introduces the ‘tricky’ words once some of the sounds have been learned and these ‘tricky’ words are based on those that children within the UK would meet, including many words from the Oxford Reading Tree scheme,(multicultural and non sexist and fun) which many schools have already invested in. This would therefore enable the schools to introduce the scheme without having to invest heavily in another reading scheme.
I like this programme as it allows a school to develop its own learning materials within the context of the programme which could be personal to the class making the learning even more child centred.
