Subject: Thoughts about the Charlotte mystery

Perhaps it isn't a mere coincidence that Mr Eko was subtly mentioned in the same episode Charlotte hinted at "being born" on the island.

It's Miles who suggested first that Charlotte may have a link to the island. We know that Miles can hear the dead. In the flashforwads Hugo also is able to comunicate with the dead and was supposedly playing chess with Mr Eko (who used to see his dead brother too)when Sayid came to visit him.

In the same episode Locke pointed out that the island was a place of miracles...which Jack denied.

In a previous season we learnt from a flashback that Mr Eko was sent to investigate on a miracle concerning a young girl. Her name was Charlotte and she came back to life as an autopsie was performed on her. Later she stopped Eko at the airport to deliver a message to from Yemi and claimed to have seen him while she was "between places"...

Coincidence?

Now I wonder if Charlotte Lewis isn't some sort of construct "made by the island -that would be indeed "between places"-, out of the magic box, from several characters' experience. She speaks Korean quite fluently, her name is the same as an English actress who had Iraqi roots...There are just many connections between her and other characters.

I was puzzled by the reference to Ecko until you posted, and it seems to work nicely : )

I barely understood a third of the references! Sounds like a good theory, though. I think it's been very effective to not see or hear anything that Miles may have heard so we almost forget that he was a ghost whisperer in his first appearance. When he does make somewhat strange statements, I'm always struck with, "Oh yeah, he might be hearing the dead!"

It's going to be a long wait!

"...Mr Eko was sent to investigate on a miracle concerning a young girl. Her name was Charlotte..."

I think this is it! I really do. I need to look further into but this would make total sense. Yeah dear Chani!

[> That's certainly the most interesting Charlotte theory I've read so far! -- anyasbuttmonkey, Tuesday, June 03, 07:24:50pm [1] (cpc1-pool4-0-0-cust460.sotn.cable.ntl.com/80.7.61.205)

I kinda don't want her to turn out to be Ben & Annie's daughter, because it's the obvious choice, and although we're about due some Occam's Razor on this show, that would kinda be a copout for me (although certainly interesting for the actors to play out). So I like this theory that Charlotte was "made" by the Island! It also helps explain the one thing that bugs me about her background - how someone so young can be at the top of her field when in reality she'd barely be done with her PhD!

So how do you think the Island "inserted" Charlotte into the timeline? Did she just turn up in England one day with this fake backstory do you think? And can the Island's influence effect other people's memories/historical records?

So far all we know is that the island has some power on the outer world that we see in flashes, either flashbacks (Desmond's experiences) or flasforwards.

But I am still not convinced that this outer world we get to see through the flashes is a "real world" anyway. IMO it is part of what I call "the island effect", a fantasy within of a fantasy. We may have not seen the real world yet.

I can see the logic in that, but I for one would be kinda pissed if they turned round in Season 6 and said "oh, yeah, they never actually left"!

I personally subscribe to the "Vile Vortices" theory of explaining the Island's connection to various parts of the real world, and that maybe through that it can influence the world at large. If you haven't heard of the Vile Vortices, you should read this article at Wikipedia... it seems to tick all the right boxes in terms of the "how" and the "where" of the various location-plotholes in the Lostverse (how a Polar Bear - and Ben - ended up in Northern Africa, how a boat sailing off from Papa New Guinea wound up slap bang in the middle of the Island, stuff like that). And speaking for myself, I'd prefer this to be part of the explanation behind the Island because it's based on a "real" theory, not just something the writers have concocted (not that I mind that either!).

I don't care much about an explanation actually. I'm here for the journey not necessarily for the final answer.

Besides I doubt that they can explain the various ghosts and miracles we have seen by using a "real" theory.

I'd much prefer everything to belong to some poetical licence. As I said once, Jacob must be JJ Abrams himself since his middle name is Jacob.

I'm fairly certain not everything will get answered in full - I'm happy to let the numbers "just be", for instance - but I think for the bigger questions that they've raised, they'll have to provide some answers. I think at the end of the day, they have to wrap up Lost in such a way that the average TV viewer can be satisfied with it. While some of the more "higher thinkers" (of which you are obviously one seeing as I have to look stuff up when I read your more theory-based posts!) would be happy with more vagueries and "poetic license", they are going to get some shit levelled at them if they don't provide a reasoning! Obviously, I don't expect *everything* to be tied up in a ribbon by May 2010, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect most things to at least be alluded to!
