THE LIES OF EOGHAN HARRIS

Sir,

In response to Eoghan Harris’s “…Orwellian long good-bye to the left” (January 13, 2002 Sunday Independent p.13): Newsflash – Hitler was right wing and opposed neutrality, not all left-wingers are pacifists, although many right-wingers conveniently are and the US did have pogroms (organized massacres of helpless people--- Webster’s Dictionary). Just ask any Holocaust survivor (Jew or Gentile), Spanish Civil War Veterans from the socialist Abraham Lincoln Brigade (some of whom also fought in WW II), the people of East Timor and any Native American from the Narragansett to the Nez Perce and many of the other aboriginal tribes all around and in between there.

And this just in: Jesus Christ was a pacifist, Ireland is a Christian Nation often times invaded (so hardly ever feeling themselves very safe), the Nazis were anti-Semitic and the Ku Klux Klan organized massacres of many helpless African-Americans from the 1860’s to the 1960’s to enforce Jim Crow segregation laws in the American South - hence the left-wing, non-neutral and pacifist civil rights movement there which also never felt themselves very safe given the murders of among others civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner (reference A People’s History of the United States:1492- Present by left-wing Jewish-American pacifist Howard Zinn who flew 80 combat missions as a B-17 Bombardier during WWII [Harper Collins Publishers, New York 1995]).

Me thinks though that Eoghan Harris knew all of this (or easily could have) so critical questions have to be asked: Why does he write and insinuate otherwise and who is paying him to do so? Moreover, the old I-was-once-lost (left)-but-now-I’m-found (right) formula is just that: old and transparent. Truth be told, Harris probably wasn’t left or now right --- just shamefully opportunistic from the get go. If communism were in vogue, he’d probably be a communist. But since right wing paranoia is currently fashionable, there you have it – the logic of the irrational right. Now Israeli massacres and bulldozing of helpless Palestinian people are not pogroms anymore than was General George Armstrong Custer’s 1876 attempt to organize a massacre of the Cheyenne and Sioux people living along the Little Big Horn River.
Revisionism is only a considerable force in places like the Sunday Independent where people like Harris feel themselves very safe.

This letter was sent to sunday.letters@unison.independent.ie on January 14, 2002, but typical revisionists, they only printed the last 9 lines of it but permitted another more lengthy letter in support of Harris’s earlier editorial all in convenient violation of course of this newspaper’s own letters to editor rules on length of letters. Chomsky is right: this is way beyond Orwell.
