As we head into the exciting, uncharted uplands of amateurism, here is an attempt to re-create the best composite, and amateur, Kenilworth side (limited by my memory & unfamiliarity with recent crops & not including Pirates-only players). Where the names might be unfamiliar, some history is added:
Full Back: Glyn Owen
Wing: Martin Clifford/John Huins (Swansea)
Centre: Chris Wheatley
Centre: Mike Schofield (Warwickshire cap straight from KRFC)
Wing: Ken Freeborn (Midlands vs. South Africa)
Fly Half: Don Sproul (Nuneaton/Scottish trial)
Scrum Half: Goronwy Morgan (Swansea)
Prop: Derek DePellette
Hooker: Reg Varney
Prop: Ian Hunter/Nick Cox
Second Row: Rusty Brayshaw
Second Row: Powelly
Flank: Don Cole/Rowley
No. 8: Chris Holmes
Flank: Another one of them Antipodeans
Seems a pretty good side to me, & only 10 bob pay cheques!
