The objective is to have a successful club - that doesn't mean just a successful 1st.XV. In fact, focusing ONLY on the 1st. XV is a recipe for disaster. Look at Coventry.
Also, you can't even have a successful 1st. XV these days without revenue, and you can't have revenue without sensible, commercial decisions on proper use of assets eg. the main pitch, and, as the previous contributor pointed out, the support of hundreds of other club members and players.
The 1st. XV represents the club, but it is not the soul of the club.
PS The 1st. XV are playing away at Peterborough next Saturday. I wonder what the plans are for the home games?
