Attention: There is an outbreak of the EHV-1 virus. They are concerned and our monitoring this at the NHSRA. The following information from the PRCA answers a lot of questions. Right now both National Finals Rodeo are still scheduled. I am going to stay on top of this and give you updates. Please spread the word to continue to watch for updates here.
Information about the Outbreak: basically 2 horses in CO tested positive for the virus after attending the National Cutting Horse Association event in Ogden, Utah from April 30 to May 8. Since the diagnosis of the CO horses, horses in several other states including Idaho, California and Washington were diagnosed - they also were at the Utah show. Horses at a cutting horse show in Kern County, CA came down with the virus at the show. One of those horses and horses in several other states have been euthanized do to the disease.

Information on the disease: The EHV-1 organism spreads quickly from horse to horse and the neurologic form of the virus can reach high morbidity and mortality rates. The incubation period of EHV-1 is typically 2-10 days.
Prognosis depends on severity of signs and the period of recumbency. There is no specific treatment for EHV-1. Treatment may include intravenous fluids, anti-inflammatory drugs and other appropriate supportive treatment. Currently, there is no equine vaccine that has a label claim for protection against the neurological strain of the virus.

Advice for Horse Owners: All horse owners who attended the Ogden, UT, event should notify their veterinarian and isolate and monitor their horses for clinical signs of the disease. Some horses may not show signs of the disease but may still be a carrier. Those owners are also encouraged to restrict movement of their horses and take the horses temperature 2 times daily, even if they show no other symptoms if the temperature is elevated contact your veterinarian immediately.
Every horse owner should educate themselves on the symptoms and if their horse show any symptoms, ISOLATE, DO NOT MOVE THEM and CONTACT YOUR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY.

Symptoms include:
· Fever preceding neurologic signs (either in a horse diagnosed with EHM or in horses that
have been exposed to a horse diagnosed with EHM),
· Decreased coordination,
· Urine dribbling,
· Loss of tail tone,
· Hind limb weakness,
· Leaning against a wall or fence to maintain balance,
· Lethargy, and
· Inability to rise.

Before transporting horses interstate, contact the State Veterinarian in the state you are traveling to insure there are no travel restrictions

Trying to find out if Jessica Gray & Rachel Henderson hosted a goat tying clinic to raise money for their Nationals trip, would you be interested in attending? Both are National top 4 qualifiers this year as FRESHMAN and would offer a group session Saturday evening and again Sunday morning for those interested. The cost would most likely be $100 per person. Please let me know if this is something that might interest you so that we can begin making plans. It would most likely be limited to 12 students. Thanks!

WHALEY FAMILY

Date Posted: 08:01:17 05/10/11 Tue

IT is with much PRAYER, THOUGHT and SADNESS that Laci Whaley has made the decision to put her AMAZING horse "ACE" =-=--FOR SALE! ACE is a gorgous 11 yr old. 15.3 hand, Red Roan Gelding SPEEDster, has won Barrel Racing and Pole Bending Saddle Championships. By far too, many buckles to count and $$$$ at Jackpots and NBHA's! ACE just ran Laci to State and National Qualifications AGAIN this year, in Florida High School Rodeo.
LACI is moving on to Gainesville for College and will be raising and training new barrel prospects when her time permits. ACE is one of the BEST High School Barrel Racing and Pole Bending Horses in the State. He will run consistant 20 sec. poles. Has clocked 19's but Laci hit poles. Ace will place you in the top 3 basically every run he makes in barrels- (when the barrels are left UP). ACE has traveled to GALLUP, FARMINGTON, NM and GILLETTE, WY for Nationals. HE is well known and loved by folks across the nation.
AS I SIT HERE WRITING THIS, I'M CRYING MY EYES OUT! -- Things change, time to move on --- ACE is just to GRAND and SPECIAL of a horse to be a pasture ornament. Laci will not ever run poles on him again. HE IS AWESOME in POLES and ABSOLUTELY LOVES THEM, so its NOT FAIR FOR HIM!
A VERY EXPERIENCED RIDER IS NECESSARY - even though Laci got him when he was 4 and she was 11 - they have grown-up together thru Jr. Rodeo, Wrangler Division and High School Rodeo. He is now way more powerful and will take it from you when you lift and he see's that barrel or pole pattern. ACE knows his job and does it EXTREMLY well! You just better be ready. ACE has the kindest EYES and HEART of any horse on our place. HE LOVES LACI and trust HER with his LIFE as she does HIS. - PLEASE call Laci or myself at 407.709.5879 or 407.908.1215 - SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE because this is a very tough decision for our family - well maybe not KW, but it sure has been for Laci and I - KW is ready to unload some of Laci's barrel horses! I must add: that "I" forgot to submit ACE for 2011 Horse of the Year for FHSRA - or he would have been right up there in the running for that. IN our EYES - ACE HAS BEEN HORSE OF THE YEAR since the day he stepped in our BARN!

Hello everyone,

We are starting to plan next season and have a lot of work to do. I'll be talking to the directors this week and starting to put together a schedule. We have alot of interest in regards to sharing venues and expenses with the high school division. This will not be an easy thing to do and we need everyones input. Please contact me at jclair@chiefinspections.com or 407-383-7241 with any thoughts or comments.
Our plan as of now is to be consistant with last years format for the number and dates of rodeos.

I will plan to attend the high school general membership meeting in Mascotte on the 29th to get some feedback from them. I hope to see you there.

Hey Ed,
We are selling raffle tickets @$20 each for 2 free spots in the clinic. ALL of that $$$ is going to the student fund. So far we have sold approximately $350.00 worth of tickets. I am hoping that some of our members will sell some tickets, also. This could be a very good fundraiser if everyone participates in the process.
There is a limit of 40 tickets to be raffled off for each spot. If we continue to sell tickets, then I would add another spot if necessary. So, PLEASE if you know any team ropers who could benefit from the help of a 2 time world champion, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sell those tickets.
As for the clinic, we kept the price at a minimum so people could afford to go. At this point the clinic is hopefully going to pay for itself after food and lodging.
Also, I spoke to Walt and he was kind enough to give me 1 full day with him at his ranch in Texas to raffle off at the finals!!!!!! On the road to Gallup!!!! WOOHOO!!
Thanks, Stacie
