Well Oldie, it's nice you keep this board fresh by creating new characters every so often. Sorry I've got to run, but I just don't have time to read your entire board right now. Glad to see you haven't changed. Catch you later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have a smoking family; my husband, me and the children. I remember I started out at 12. My husband told me he picked up his first cigarette at around 14. I think young people smoking have a lot to do with the parents. Both of our parents are smokers and we looked up to them as examples. Smoking made them looked ”„cool' to us.

Our 26-year-old daughter Katie started at the age of 10. Both my son Mike and her wife Julia smoke too; but Julia has stopped for now since she is carrying her first child and she said it was very hard in the beginning since she again is a ”„victim”¦ of parental smoking and picked up the habit since 11. I know their family well and since both our houses allowed smoking, they had no problem smoking in front of us any time when they were seeing each other as teens.

My husband has more control than me and he can skip smoking for days if necessary. But I just cannot seem to stop smoking. My children have been seeing me smoking since they were born. Since I am such a heavy smoker, around 4 packs a day minimum, I certainly smoked in front of them at home a whole lot. If I could smoke at home, there was no reason why they could not.

Therefore, when Katie asked me for a cigarette one day soon after her 10th birthday, I naturally handed one over to her without any fuss. She was frank and open. My husband had no objection. We even bought her first carton as a belated birthday present. Then the younger brother took it up and you know what, Katie showed him the way. Whether she was the good sister sharing her cigarettes with the younger brother or she really was the devil, showing him a bad example is debatable.

They both had problems with smoking in school and Katie was suspended twice. I ended up grounding them from smoking in public except at home. Mike finished high school and went on to college but Katie eventually dropped out from high school. Whether the emotion of being suspended had hurt her feeling and eventually led to her failing grades I do not really know; I could remember the days when she was an A student.

Katie was pregnant 6 years ago and she asked me whether I stopped when carrying her and Mike. Well, yes or no, I was down to just over a pack a day. She carried on with her daily smoking of about 2 packs. The baby was perfect. She was also smoking with her second pregnancy and again had no trouble. Now the elder one Jennifer is 5 and Katie has said that she will not mind if she smokes too. She is divorced and therefore has no problem with the father even if her kids start smoking early.

Jennifer always plays with her mom”¦s cigarettes and I do not think she understands what smoking is all about. She has certainly seen a fair share of adult smoking, her mom, uncle Mikey and aunt Julia and of course us, the grandparents. I would suppose she would pick up the habit eventually.
