Megan writes about the mother of an 18-year-old girl who is not ready to turn her loose. I was fearful that my anti 18-year-old daughter who graduates from high school this month would go off to college without the experience my older daughters had.
Scratch that fear. It's hit sooner and harder than expected. We went to the Cinco de Mayo dance Friday night. It's a fund-raiser and my husband generously bids on a few items.
There's this one family who has a boy at the same university our second child graduates from Saturday. Jorge is a junior in college and is just barely 21.
My innocent Kendra paired off with this guy. They left early but she came home shortly after we came home. Jorge's mother, Sylvia, and dad J.G. left feeling no pain. Jorge took them home and came and picked up my daughter. They rode for about an hour.
The had a nice time on a date Saturday. Since Kendra is going to the college Saturday, she has asked if she can go there Friday night and stay in the girl's dorm.
As you know, a dorm is co-educational except for a very few hours. We first said we would talk about it gave our approval before Jorge left for college Sunday.
After that, the kids rode around again before he left. Yesterday after school rocked along although Kendra was getting along better than usual with her younger smoking sister.
It was difficult to tell the norm since Kendra's team had just ended it's softball season last Saturday. This morning, Kendra poured herself a cup of coffee and lit a B&H Menthol, the full flavor one.
I tried not to act surprised. She said she tried a few on her dates with Jorge and decided to give smoking a try as long as they go together.
I asked why she started with a full-flavor brand. He explained that was the brand his mother used to smoke before she gave them up.
I took that comment to issue a warning. I said you know Sylvia was a party smoker who got hooked through too much party smoking.
Jorge said he know about his mother's smoking for 10 years. He said she told him she did smoke when they went out and decided to smoke more often. I just said you can see how addiction can come on and that there are ex anti's out there with the smoking habit they thought they never wanted.
Kendra said she was a big girl now and took her sister to school. I'm for letting this go and to not do anything to discourage the younger daughter.
Her big sister is going to enjoy the fact that one anti sibling will be shutting up. I'm sure the oldest girl, who plans to go to the graduation, will be sickened if she learns her little sister is smoking. Sharley Jo gave them up at 16.
