Jon, the sentiment thet you express has been discussed on this board many times. I agree with your opinion to a point.

I liked the "jocks". Even the new kid on the block: Mickey Dolenz!

What I didn't like:

- The playlist had been narrowed again and again. The same songs played over and over. There were hundreds of good songs that were ignored.

- Most of the songs in WCBS's "Top 500" list were never played on the air (at least in the last few years). Why?

- The choice of staff versus music wss schitzophrenic. Look at the last few years. WCBS-FM had many excellent DJ's that were icons to our generation, but, they were forcrd to play many songs from the late 70's and 80's.

- A lot of songs on the WCBS-FM playlist were not intended for an oldies station, but were more suitable for a "Mix" or "Lite" station. We wanted Dave Clark 5, Temptations, Shirelles, Monkees, Chuck Berry, Jay and the Americans, Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers etc. They gave us Air Supply, Andy Gibb, Gloria Gaynor, KC and the Sunshine Band, and sometimes even a 60's song.

- A bad decision was made to cancel some of the most popular shows (the "Do-wop shop" and "Top 20 Countdown" were my favorites....I looked forward to them each week).

What's frustrating is that Infinity could have made it better if they only polled their audience. Instead, every change that they made alienated their existing listeners. According to some people on this message board, the reason for this happening is embedded in the ugly politics of radio and adverising.

In spite of all of this I miss the WCBS-FM. The on-air staff were almost family to me. I imagine most of the "Jocks" liked their jobs as much as we enjoyed listening to them.

Losing CBS-FM is like losing a loved after a long battle with cancer. You remember them the way they were when they were healthy, not as they were when they were dying.
