Hi. I'm a twenty-something oldies fan from Connecticut. I'd been listening to CBS-FM for 10 years until it finally went off the air. Sometimes I go into the city to visit relatives, and in the car, we always had CBS-FM on. My parents, while driving, wanted to listen to music from their childhood, and I would always say, "Well, they've got an oldies station called, WCBS-FM 101.l. They play songs you can't hear on other stations". I would always tune in, not just to listen to the music, but hear the DJs as well. (My favorites were "Cousin Brucie", Harry Harrison and Ron Lundy). While I agree that nothing lasts forever, if we're going to say to people, "Stop whining. What's done is done", then, there is no need for websites like this, who pay tribute. This site is not meant (I don't think) for discussion on oldies radio in general, but to remember WCBS-FM, and share memories with other loyal listeners. I think it's a great site, and I wish there were more of them, really. I only found out about the "Jack" takeover about a year after it happened. If I may share this story:
I was riding with my Mom to New York one afternoon, and as usual, I went to tune to CBS. (This was in the fall of 2006). I get the signal, and I notice that they're playing "Hey Ya" (I assume you know the song I'm talking about, but if not, that's all right). I thought to myself, "That's an odd tune for CBS to be playing". It wasn't until I did a little research that I found out all the sordid details.
While I'm grateful for the online version of the old format, folks, not everyone is made of money and can afford an HD or satellite radio. The oldies station in Hartford, 102.9 DRC-FM, by the way, recently took the route that CBS-FM did before its non-oldies format change, and is now only playing material from the '60s to the '80s, but even before then, as many people mentioned, they had an annoying habit of playing "burnouts", which made me want to hear CBS even more (even though in CT, one cannot get a clear signal, sadly).
