Larry, it is absolutely wrong that oldies, standards and country are not being heard in New York, but as I've said before, Madison Ave ad agencies and Wall Street investment banks have full control over what gets on the air in this market. As long as this remains the case, these formats will never return to the New York airwaves. We all know that each of those formats would have enough listeners to support them. That's a fact in a market of 20 million potential listeners, but Wall Street and Madison Ave couldn't care less. These formats, according to their warped way of thinking, attract the "wrong" demographics.

Just two decades ago, there was a format for everyone from age 12 to over 70. We baby boomers had CBS-FM, teens and young adults had Z100 and PLJ, and our parents still had WNEW-AM. Business considerations as they are presently, have made sure that will never happen again.

A couple of years ago, when the Country Music Awards Show was held at either the Felt Forum or Radio City (don't recall exactly which one), representatives from XM and Sirius were there handing out programming guides to potential new subscribers. It is quite ironic and sad that a major musical awards show is held in New York and that genre is not available on the radio. It is no surprise at all that listeners frustrated which such meager offerings on the radio dial are finding alternatives on satellite and the internet.
