Subject: CBS Radio and Oldies-NY and Philly

A few of us have expressed hope that if Jack-FM continues to fail, WCBS-FM would return to oldies. If that were to occur, I am not even sure I would want that anymore considering what they have done with otheroldies stations; I shall explain.

I spent a few days in Philadelphia this past week and they have a similar situation without a station which is recognizably an oldies station and many formats missing. In Philly there is no Spanish station on FM (New York has three). There is no classical station (NY has one). There is no dance music station (New York has two). There IS a country station (New York has 0). Like New York there is no adult alternative, alternative rock or adult standards station. New York has two hip hop stations and a few more which play some hip hop. In contrast, Philly has four hip-hop stations (one is billed as CHR/Top 40 but after hearing 5 rap songs in a row I see their emphasis).

Last June when New York lost its oldies station WCBS-FM, oldies fans in Philly boasted they have three--well apparently not so anymore. Last year, WPEN AM dropped "early" oldies for sports. WSNI has always billed itself as 60s, 70s and 80s music but the latter eras seem to be favored. The remaining oldies station WOGL now bills itself as 60s and 70s music. After listening for a few hours I heard no pre-Beatles music and just a handful of 60's songs and they tended to be more rock (Steppenwolf, Stones) as opposed to 60's pop, Brill building, girl group or or Motown. So in a sense, Philly too now lacks an oldies station thanks to CBS Radio which has decimated WOGL. Does anyone know about other oldies stations arounfd the country which CBS-Radio has dismantled or "watered down"?
