Larry, I read your article and you've hit it right on the head! Radio stations are programmed to impress advertisers, not listeners. It doesn't matter what the focus group or market research says about what will be successful, it's what the advertisers want to support. Madison Ave controls the ad buys in New York, which is why there will never be another oldies station in this market. Program and music directors can no longer cater to their market, they must cater to the advertisers, which makes their jobs rather thankless.

I'm quite sure that market research would've shown that New York wanted no part of the JACK format, but as long as Madison Ave will support it, it will be there.
