Subject: Next Step For NYC Oldies Fans?

This question popped up quite frequently in the reality of the June 3rd Massacre. WCBS as non-Oldies now has covered all or part of the past four seasons. Things have slowed down somewhat.

Regarding Oldies and associated matters: Where do concerned people go from here?

WKBW is no longer Oldies, as we all know. Their parent company uses many of the same reasons for changing format that we've heard here. One chief difference is there is another Oldies station in Buffalo.
But one glaring indictment is that 1520 chased MUSIC off the frequency altogether (they're now political talk). Another groaning bit of deflection centered on the station's (and they're not alone) disinterest in clientele or listeners outside their ADI -- their home base and suburbs. To which it has to be asked: Why do they and others need a 50,000 watt signal and wind up covering huge areas they don't want? 10000 watts can do the same job for KB; they send it all east anyway. Entercom Broadcasting claims it's a money thing. Fine. Save 40,000 watts on the NYSEG bill as a start and saving money instead of blaming older people for not supporting you.

Station licenses come up for renewal later this year. Perhaps it should be pointed out to the FCC that a station generally regarded within the industry to show NON-concern for a certain community is basically violating its privilege to cover it. Now might be a swell time for groups to consider applying for another station on 1520 closer to NYC, or 1530, or 1510 -- and otherwise making this age discrimination, betrayal and listner base deterioration a major issue with the people who regulate it. 2006 looms as a year for major shakeups in terrestrial radio and as such, the scrutiny of the vision behind the upheavals also should be pointed out -- as often as possible.

More examples: Disney is serving no one on 1560 and never did or will. WEPN is a business card, that's all, and an ill-designed one at that. WBBR is a 50,000 watt bank thermometer (in fact, the bank thermometer in this wee town serves more people daily than WBBR does). Should the Trend in a few weeks show that Nothing Talk on 92.3 is reaching no one ...
In fact, heck -- if a case can be made that recent years worth of format switches and cutbacks, especially ill-advised and hasty ones, have chased away more listeners than these stations 'served' before all the blundering (translated: There are now fewer being 'served' by licensed terrestrial radio) ....

Well, then Cabin Fever season and all its anxiety and emotion seems like an ideal time for people who feel they've been screwed to prepare a little shafting of their own.

Am I off base here?

By the way: 'KBs license comes up for renewal June 1 2006.
