Subject: Oldies become mass appeal

The three Rod Stewart's albums of standards/oldies were a phenomenal success. As Rod has been an active performer and consistently on the charts since 1971, it should be no surprise that whatever he does will have some level of succcess.
The big surprise is the sudden success of Barry Manilow's "Songs from the '50's"--it ENTERED Billboards Album chart this week at #1. Barry hasn't had a hit in years so this is all the more impressive. With so many movie soundtracks and commercials using oldies, and with the success of Jersey Boys, the disconnect between radio and what listeners want to hear and are purchasing is perplexing.

Bob Shannon suggested this proves the buying power of older listeners; the fact they responded to ads and TV promos instantly and went to music stores immediately to purchase the Manilow album. If by chance a number of younger listeners are buying the album, this proves the argument even further that oldies appeal to everyone. Take that Jack!
