Actually as a previous poster mentioned, they stayed automated after the Rock Pile with a beautiful music format called Music Only for a Woman. I think that led to the NIS or News and Information Service.

WNBC AM at the time kept changing program directors and direction and the FM was not making money and I guess the National Broadcasting Company did not take 97.1 FM that seriously at least through the first half of the 70s.

Another automated format took place earlier on WABC FM which became WPLJ in the early 70s. It was called Love. It was syndicated on several stations which the American Broadcasting Company owned. It was progressive rock with a man who called himself Brother John. It was heard during different parts of the broadcast day on 95.5 in 1969 and 70.

I realize this does not have to do with CBS FM or what happened last June but I hope you found this interesting.
