For more than 20 years, Mr. Toomey, who was a pitcher and first baseman, played in fast-pitch softball leagues until he was in his 60s.

"He played for the Belvedere Tavern, Swallow at the Hollow, Raven Inn and the Knights of Columbus, who gave him the Italian name of Vince Tumello.
When he played in Jewish leagues, they called him Marty Rubin," said a son, Patrick J. Toomey of Hamilton.

He also enjoyed playing basketball, and his style of play was distinguished by the two-hand set shot, his son said.

Big Vince, nice man.
