Subject: Swim bladder problem 'cure' to try

We moved house last year and had to move a 4 foot tank containing nine fish – Mostly fantails & shibunkins. It was quite a job (netting our loach was a problem!) but successful. We transported our fish in two large brewing buckets with lids.

After a short time in the bucket – after we had set off - one of our ryukins floated to the top and began showing classic swim bladder problem symptoms – loss of balance, couldn’t dive etc. We had to leave her like this for more than 5 hours due to the journey and unloading etc. etc.

We have never yet successfully revived a fish in this state and we have tried every commercially available potion as well as raw peas and all the other suggested ‘cures’.

My husband instead (he got the idea from watching a programme on nursing sick sharks) got hold of the fish, pushed it down to the bottom of the bucket and proceeded to ‘swim’ it slowly round, a bit like running a toy car around. He did this for quite some time and in total after re floating a few times probably about an hour she returned to normal. She is now around 15 cms and very healthy, no mishaps since.

What have you got to loose when a fish is in this state, try it!
