I've found an old version of Windows my brother burnt to disk for me a while ago. All he's written on the CD is "XP Pro", so I'm not sure whether thats SP2 or whatnot. Do you think thats worth a go, or does it have to be basic XP?

The bugger is knowing whether or not it is the full version of Service Pack 2. That's the crucial bit, because the Mac drivers only work with Service Pack 2 or later. (I was going to suggest just buying it, but I had a quick look on Amazon and XP Home SP2 is £167, which seems a bit much just to play some games!) I've sent an email around the office asking if anyone has a copy.

I'll try the one I've got - I assume that if it isn't SP2, I won't have irretrievably fucked the computer? :-)

If you read the BootCamp instructions it explicitly says that trying a previous version of Windows can land you in a mess. The Mac itself can't tell which version of Windows you are installing because it installs as an entirely separate bootable OS. An old version of Windows might install almost completely before it realises it doesn't have any drivers. You may find yourself then in a complete mess, as there might be problems booting back into Mac OS X.

Thanks for the warning.

It says that it is SP2, so I should be ok to go ahead, yes?

If it is SP2, and doesn't require a previously installed version of Windows, then you have exactly what you want. Whoopee!

In which case I might want to borrow that disc off you!

Goddammit, I get all ready to start, then realise I don't have a USB keyboard. Which I need, as the wireless Mac keyboard won't initially work when installing Windows!

Grrr.

How on Earth do you expect him to type with a cookie?

I'm sure he'd find a way

Serves you both right anyway, getting me all hot and bothered with the techy talk, how do you expect me to talk any sense at all?
