Both Oxford and Cambridge automatically award all of their graduates an MA. So in Cambridge the first degree (for both arts and sciences is a BA), but after four or five years your BA is automatically "upgraded" to an MA regardless of what you've been doing since graduation, and they actually have another graduation ceremony and everything where they get awarded their MA. That just happened here in Cambridge -- Fred and Henry just got their MAs. I had to work bloody hard for my MSc in Cognitive Science, hence my sneering.

as does everyone here, just been having a very lively conversation about it with some academic staff, I only had to mention it and it set everyone off, they are furious, we have people here who as you say have worked damned hard to achieve what they have and for this to be the "norm" at Oxbridge is outrageous.

Of course I have succumned to your charms, how could I not?
