Do you think he was playing with me and using the no girlfriend thing as an excuse not to have to tell me that he just didn't want me? Or do you think he was actually honest but then someone better came along?

Either way sucks. I need your perspective, I know it's been awhile but try to think back to your wild twenties! ;p

I'm sorry to say that the "I just don't want a girlfriend" is generally code for "I don't want YOU as my girlfriend". I know it is in my case. Sorry. It sucks.
