Subject: Does anyone know how to rip DVDs?

Darren, I'm looking at you!

I need a DVD for a paper I'm writing but I can only loan it for a limited time from the library. Help!

Windows? I'm more of a Mac and Linux/Unix person. I'll try and find out and get back to you ASAP. I'll be expecting plenty of fawning and general sycophancy in return.

Handbrake, by far the best tool on Mac and Linux is now available for Windows too:

http://handbrake.fr/

It's completely free and because it was originally a Mac program it is super easy to use. Further help is on the Handbrake website.

If the DVD is encrypted (likely) you'll need an extra tool called DVD Decrypter (also a free download). Then you do the rip in two phases: first you decrypt the DVD to your hard drive using DVD Decrypter and then use Handbrake to turn the decrypted DVD files into something like an AVI file.

I want a back rub or something for being this incredibly helpful.

Yes, Google DVD Decrypter. It's a complicated story, but basically the decryption of DVDs is of suspect legality in some countries, so you have to hunt around for it a little. On Macs and Linux Handbrake will automatically use a decryption library if one is installed, but it seems on Windows you have to download a separate tool and do the rip in two passes.
