a strong speech. i understand why he spoke as he did...but i was grateful for Rev Lowery's more emotional and touching words at the end.

and i loved yo-yo ma's joyful gleeful face as he played.

the whole thing was lovely.

Rev Warren's words about equality however, just made me think he's a horrible hypocrite. Prop 8 supporting mofos.

And tbh I was bemused about the prayers in general, it made me sort of uneasy. I don't know if I'll ever be comfortable with how often "God" is mentioned in politics.

In fact as far as Western countries go, I think that whole God business in politics is a peculiarly American phenomenon, which is weird given the whole constitutional separation of state from religion. In Britain the head of state is also the head of the Church of England, and the bishops get to sit in the House of Lords, so constitutionally Britain is the opposite (or would be if we had a constitution) but it is all purely ceremonial -- religion simply doesn't enter into politics and I remember how Tony Blair even mentioning his faith used to either make people guffaw or wriggle uncomfortably.

France is totally catholic but religion just does not enter into any part of public life ever. School kids here aren't even allowed to wear crucifixes to school.

So, yeah, hearing God mentioned every other word today was really weird for me too, especially given what an enlightened liberal Obama is. I was quite surprised that he actually included "non-believers" alongside Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus; I bet that that was actually quite a controversial thing to do.

No one cares about the faith of politicians. Now lets hope than in a few decades, an atheist will be American president! Or *gasp* even a homosexual, or a female!!!

I was happy to hear non-Christians included. Happy that they used his full name during the swearing in as well, I think they were considering just saying "H".

And I loved Jill Biden's coat. :)

As everyone knows vegetarianism is incompatible with the other requirements you quite correctly specified.

I was having lunch last week with the guys and gals from the office and all the girls ordered tartare de bouef. I congratulated them and mentioned how rare it would be to find one British woman who would gleefully tuck into a big plate of raw beef. When they asked why, I mentioned that quite a few British women were more or less vegetarian. At first they looked really puzzled. Then they just burst into hysterical laughter. I love French women.

I'm glad you like French women but tbh I don't see why one should congratulate them for eating meat. :/

This guy I know once discribed himself as a proud meat-eater, and I find it quite silly to be proud of something like that. Or proud of being vegetarian, for that matter!

there were movements to strike it from the oath and from the ceremony. of course it wasn't even taken as a real consideration.

it's part of all of our ceremonies though. i can't see it in the near future being separated. i wish it would though.

warren's is a jackass. i was just sitting here actually still wondering why he was chosen.

lowery was hilarious at the end. i love it!

separating church and state is actually not in the constitution. Freedom of speech..do it, if it's what you want.

But ... yellow..being mellow..hee. I thought he was funny. :)
