 They're a type of Mandragora. Nobody is really sure how or where they evolved, but their thorns are very toxic and their flowers are prized as being worth millions on most worlds.

They need to be in the water for the sake of photosynthesis during the day. Being outside results in them doing damage to the outer layers of their skin, making it difficult to absorb water. Without cutting the damaged portions away, as little as 30% damage can kill them.
