Miss AL USA is not cheap to do. Entry fee is $1100 and winner gets no scholalarship whatsoever. The entry fee in addition to wardrobe, coaching, travel, hotel, food, etc. makes it more expensive to do than MAO, with no chance to recoop any of the money spent.

1,000 for entry! Holy cow you have to be privileged just to compete.

Not if you get sponsors.
At least Alabama USA is upfront with how much it costs and has one fee that covers everything. The girls that compete in preliminaries all year easily spend that much in travel expenses and tickets for the family that attends, plus DoE and other extras. Even if you cap the CMN at 4 preliminaries, you still have to come up with 250.00 for state competition. That is 750.00 just for CMN.
So I guess you have to be privileged to compete in both systems.
