Subject: New Worlds to Conquer

Happy Hapgood of The Dispatch reports that Sergeant Tim, formerly the King of Procrastination, has finally obtained the complete Flash Gordon trilogy. Tim proclaimed it a time for New Worlds to Conquer and New Chapters to View, while Commander Rick, Officer Torch and Prince Barin were heard to exclaim in unison, "It's about time!"

Chapter One, New Worlds to Conquer, surprised me by picking up right were the the '36 serial left off. I wasn't sure if it would since there was a two-year interim between the serials, and I have purposely avoided reading any online plot summaries before watching the chapters.

Dr Zarkov's rocketship is returning to Earth from Mongo at 1200 miles per hour with Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Zarkov aboard. The trio seems to have survived the Mongo ordeal and subsequent space journey intact (although for some reason the trip has altered Dale's hair color, heh). The landing is a bit rough, but Flash and company have finally come home (Zarkov: "Well, it sounds as if we landed right in the middle of the United States.") The returning travelers are welcomed home as heroes with a ticker tape parade and the works.

Meanwhile, we learn that Ming has survived and is on Mars with the red planet's Queen Azura. Using the beam from a Nitron Lamp they are draining the Earth of its nitron, causing atmospheric disturbances around the globe. Flash and Zarkov investigate, and are followed by the inquisitive Happy Hapgood, a reporter. Flash, Zarkov and Dale (with stowaway Happy Hapgood) start for Mongo to stop the beam that is slowly destroying the Earth. However, they soon discover the source of the menace is not Mongo, but Mars, and chapter one concludes with Zarkov's ship spinning out of control toward the Martian surface.

Chapter One does a nice job laying the foundation for the coming adventures, introducing us to Azura, Queen of Magic and Happy Hapgood. We also get an early glimpse of what the Clay People look like when Queen Azura banishes one of her subjects to the Clay Caves.

Sergeant Tim

I neglected to clarify that New Worlds to Conquer is chapter one of Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1938), serial number two of the trilogy.
