Author: Tim
Subject: The Living Dead

The Living Dead, chapter two of Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars, sees Zarkov and his passengers crash land on Mars in the Valley of Desolation ("What an awful looking desert," Dale remarks). Ming realizes that Flash has arrived on Mars, and he and Azura take a Strato-Sled to intercept and destroy the Earthlings. When Flash and Azura briefly meet for the first time she asks, "Are all your Earthmen so violent?"

Flash hijacks a Martian Strato-Sled to escape. He spots Ming, who he had thought to be dead. Fleeing the soldiers, Flash and company take refuge in the clay caves. Dale is the first to see the Clay People, and everyone is astonished when they emerge from the cavern walls. A very effective scene introducing an imaginative new element to the story. The Clay People are obviously The Living Dead the chapter title refers to. They dwell below the surface and move around in a way that reminds me of the 1956 Universal picture The Mole People, although the faces are not the same of course.

Happy Hapgood, who earlier had not been very good at guarding one of the Martian soldiers on the Strato-Sled, does at least fire a shot at one of the Clay People. Apparently they are immune to such primitive earth weaponry. "I hit him plum center and he laughed at me," Happy exclaims.

The cliffhanger ending has our four heroes trapped by the approaching Clay People.

This chapter is the first to open with a new way of recapping earlier events. In the '36 serial simple text was used, but now the recap is told with something similar to captioned comic strip panels.

Uh oh, I should not have hyphenated Stratosled in above post, considering the recent threads "Stratosled Pilot with the New Jersey accent" and "Favorite moments with the Stratosleds in Mars".

One of the foibles of being a Sergeant, heh!

Tim...I don't want to create spoilers, so I won't comment too much re Mars serial. But, as you watch, every so often you'll see the Clay King. When you're done, I'm gonna quiz you and ask you what's his name, so pay attention pal.
