Here are some excerpts from Harper's Index in the latest edition of the magazine:
* Estimated amount by which the US GDP increases for each additional dollar of tax cuts is $1.03, compared to the amount for each additional dollar of infrastructure spending, $1.59, and of food stamps, $1.73.
* The percentage change between 1989 and 1996 in the number of democracies worldwide was +71, and percentage change since 1996 has been 0.
* The average number of people in Congo who've died from war-related causes each month since August 1998 has been 51,400.
* The percentage of dietitians who say the recession is making it more difficult for their patients to lose weight is 56 (fast food emporiums are doing well), and the percentage of US elementary schools that send obesity "report cards" home to parents is 23.
* The percentage of Texans who still live in Texas is 76 and that's the highest for any state. (Why is the mystery)
