The way the Census counts them is they devote a particular night early in the process (usually before April 1.. I think ours was March 27 or something like that) and they go out at night...all night... to all the known homeless hangouts + shelters. They also go to places that feed the homeless. Often they don't want to give their names but they count numbers. It's an inexact science to be sure but they do get counted!

seems a little dangerous, but I'd love to do it (in a group), just to get an idea how many there really are in my town. My guess is around 300-500.
