Subject: Animal hoarders...

I've been watching the shows lately on hoarding behavior, and especially animal hoarding. When I see a home with over 90 dogs, and the heart-breaking dead puppies/kitten's bodies in the 'mix'...One show I saw recently the guy had over 50 animals and was so poor none of them was spayed, or neutered.

If you knew of animal abuse going on like that in your neighborhood, would you report it? Have you ever seen anything like the shows that are on now, and the news stories coming to light about people literally 'buried alive' in their homes? Having to be excavated with heavy machinery is beyond hoarding even...

Right now I'm watching my recording of Flossie and Christine and it just breaks my heart to see the animals in so much stress.

We have a friend who is part of a rescue group locally - when Katrina hit, he made multiple trips to bring animals to STL to give them temporary and then permanent homes. At one point he had 6 black labs. Where he lives they can have 2 dogs. He'd send the labs out in pairs so that 'no one would know' he had all these dogs in his house! But of course he handled it well and eventually they got homes.

But ITA, you so feel for those animals with the sorta good intentioned hoarders that just can't handle it.

I would have loved to see the neighbors seeing a set come out....then another....then another, thinking, I KNOW I just saw those two!?

[> Never seen animal hoarding, but that Hoarders TV show -- sami, 09:44:07 08/19/10 Thu [1] (24-179-147-98.dhcp.stpt.wi.charter.com/24.179.147.98)

freaks me out. I've seen it twice, once with a family who had bedbugs so bad they were living in tents in their yard and their car because the house was so infested. ::shudder:: The other one was the guy with the beer bottle "collection" and he was almost in tears when they tried to remove the lumber he had stored in his bathtub. I think people who hoard a bit themselves enjoy watching that show cuz it makes them feel better that they aren't "that bad" yet.

I have one room (spare bedroom/office) with lots of bin storage that I keep trying to whittle down, but if I ever saw just one bug, it'd all be gone the next day. LOL. I think people who are extreme hoarders have OCD and some other mental issues tho, and need help to cut back on the stuff.

My mom saved everything and hubby's mom is the same way, but that's the generation that went thru the depression. They had a fear of being without "things" they might need. Altho MIL's whole pantry closet filled with nothing but used and folded plastic bread bags carries it a bit far. ;-)

It could be the animal hoarders start out just trying to help the poor homeless animals and then it gets away from them.

Although the AC officer in my area is an undereducated moron so I don't know if it'd help.

We had a rescue here that was walking the line of becoming an issue- we talked to a few board members and they changed a few things to keep it from becoming a problem.

I also have told clients that they CANNOT keep the new kitten and that it is too many and not fair to their other pets.

Hoarding is a mental illness and no matter how much cleaning up gets done, unless someone can help the person, it will happen again.

That said, I have gotten hoarding comments from idiot relatives who cannot fathom that Tim and I WANT to live with 4 cats and 5 dogs. It is a lot, but we keep them busy and clean and cared for and if our house is occasionally messy because of it- we see it no different than a family with toddlers.

I hate when people focus on the numbers instead of the care. I have several clients with 9 to 11 cats who do a very good job, and I know of a few with 1 or 2 who will make no effort at all.

dunno if i tolja's but wayne brought him home in may.
tabby kitten and love him to pieces! not an ass like Boo can be but our animals are well cared for even tho I didn't want a 3rd, Dizzy's just too cute for words!

she hates him but i guess that's to be expected in an 8 y/o cat compared to a 5 mo. old kitten ;-)

Space enough for the humans to live comfortably

Space enough for the animals & their animal behaviors to live comfortably.
