To be frank, even expert rheumatologists (doctors specialized in your condition) can sometimes have absolutely no clue or even misdiagnose your condition... If you have seen several doctors and their diagnosis are all equivocal, I will go ahead with the treatment plan that you have the best faith in (be it Chinese Medicine or other medical regiments).

Many diseases have (as of today) no known aetiology (i.e. we don't know exactly what causes it)... even as simple as osteoarthritis... we just cannot identify the cause of it... In light of the limits medicine can deliver in the year 2007, if the best management plan of your presenting complaint (which is pain and +/- anxiety associated with it) there are venues available to you. I don't know if switching painkiller can help but different painkillers have different indications and side effects. You can also try patches impregnated with painkiller (e.g. fentanyl patch) or joint space injection... but all these options would have to be carefully discussed with your doctor.

What you can do the next time when you see a "western" doctor is to bring up your concerns (is it pain? anxiety? or the impairment of activities of daily living?) And for each category ask your doctor to map out a short and long-term plan as to how to manage them. If you are satisfied to the pros and cons of each plan then go ahead. If not you can go to the Chinese doctor and seek their opinion (ask them to map out their treatment plans for both short- and long-term goals too).

I think this helps. Good luck to you! :-)
