Boston Globe Headlines by Liz Kowalczyk (8-28-01)states in part that HMOs are going to charge more money for teaching hospitals over community based hospitals.Kevin Counihan TUFTS V.P.for marketing and sales calls it "consumer engagement"I call it a leap for insurance profits over patients care.He sites example s one being people choosing MRI's over cheaper x-rays.When I was at HMO Chelmsford Medical Center Harvard Pilgrame. They refused to give me MRI my primarly doctor said no.After months and months I finally changed HMOs and was given MRI and was told I had advanced Multiple Myloma Leukemia in final stage.Because of HMOs policy of cheapest care to save money I can not walk without aid of a cane and leg brace.I also needed a stem cell transplant in order to have a chance of a few more years Dana Farber is where I went.Under HMOs proposal patients would be charged more for Teaching Hospital care including second opionions. Please write to public officials and talk to your employers and tell them NO!Tell them insurance companies will have to cut thier profits before cutting patients care. Our fight is not with community hospitals vs teaching hospitals it is between obscene profits by insurance companies at the expense of safe health care for all citizens.
