Today I was going to have breakfast at M.L.Shaws when I saw a sign in their window that upset me. It said (and I�m quoting from memory here so I may not get it exactly):

�This establishment supports the use of peaceful means to bring to justice those responsible for the Sept.11 atrocities.
No more racist killings.
Honor them with peace.�

I have two problems with this. The first is I find it hard to believe that any sane adult believes that these terrorists can be brought to justice peacefully. So if you know they can not be brought to justice peacefully than what would be the reason for opposing the use of force? So they can do this again? And again?
But the larger problem I have with this sign was the statement �no more racist killings�. They slaughter 6000 innocent people and if we retaliate we are doing so out of racial motivation? I don�t give a damn what ethnic origin, religion or political beliefs these terrorists have, they must pay for what they did in order to save all their future victims from suffering the same fate as the Sept. 11 victims. Retaliation in this case is justified and necessary and calling me and everyone else who supports retaliation 'racist' is inflammatory and ignorant.
After seeing that sign I walked away from M.L.Shaws and ate my breakfast elsewhere. M.L.Shaws has a right to their opinion and a right to state it, but I have a right to take my business elsewhere and I think I will continue to do so in the future.

I just thought it was time to break out this discussion on a separate thread . . . . .

My take: I think the problem is that the bus company name may be different but it's still the same set of people that you are dealing with, as far as I can tell.

My 5th grader takes the bus to and from the Greenmont area and, knock on wood, there have been no problems so far. Sorry to hear there are still issues. In the past the principals have been great advocates for bus issues. I have been dealt with rudely in the past by the bus company representatives, but I just give it right back to them. To be fair, I've also had good experiences when I have called with issues, so it probably depends upon the frustration level at the time you contact them.

Hi Sharon,
I searched the net, and I guess that they are keeping so much of the information about families and military personnel confidential, there isn't much available yet. They are afraid for families here, left behind with serving soldiers. So, much information is private.

I did find two sites that are helping with getting greetings with soldiers. Most other ways are message boards set up to leave support messages for the soldiers.

The two sites that are doing the mail support are:

I will let you know if I find something else. The wives clubs are trying to set up sites where you can support the families that are home, waiting for their loved ones to come back also.

Does anyone have anyone in the service that they may share their address so we could write and show support. Perhaps that service person also knows another service person that doesn't have anyone writing and would like support.
When we had Desert Storm I wrote to servicemen/women through an address given from Dear Abbey.
I had many soldiers happy to recieve these letters and homemade cookies. One was from NY and he was a Fireman (we still write and I am happy he is okay as he was at the World Trade Center)- but the one that put a lump in my throat was on a Sunday Afternoon. I was cleaning my sons room and the phone rang. He said " Hi this is TC. I am in Texas now - you were writing to me when I was in the Gulf"
He went on to tell me he was 19 and was happy to get those letters as he had no family and thats why he joined the service. My letters were the only ones he got and he was so happy to have someone thinking of him because he didn't know what might happen.
As a Former USO volunteer (Vietnam Era) I am a believer in supporting our men and women who serve our country.

Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between the children and the adults on this forum. Some of you hide behind fake names and spread hate and slander against other individuals for your own personal reasons. You behave like a bunch of children. It's disgusting. I enjoy reading this forum to hear about different ideas on different subjects related to our town. That's what this forum is about, not about a few childish jerks who like to mouth off. It's clearly evident that you weren't raised properly and have no respect for others. Just take a close look at the things you write, It's horrible, you should be ashamed.

It is with a great deal of sadness that I write of another loss this town has experienced as of Wednesday morning. John Machado, a long time Dracut resident passed away after a brief illness. He leaves a wife, three daughters, and four or five grandchildren. He also leaves a sister.

Many may not know John although he was very involved in the community. That is largely attributable to the fact that he was quiet about the many good things he did.. He was a Firefighter and an EMT in Dracut for many years. That alone can give you an indication of the kind of man he was. It certainly didn�t end there though.

He worked as the Director of Safety Services for the Greater Lowell chapter of the American Red Cross. He also trained EMT�s and taught aquatic rescue classes. In his spare time (yeah, right!) he also was a member of the Lowell Kiwanis and, if memory serves, he was also the Civil Defense Director in Dracut for a time.

John didn�t get headaches because his halo was too tight. He was a fun-loving guy with a mischievous streak. He didn�t take himself too seriously and he never sought the spotlight for all the things he did. Many years ago, when the Kiwanis ran the Toys for Tots in Lowell, I can remember John working late to get the toys ready, then going out for a beer and he would always have us in stitches with his stories and jokes. He would then go to work in the morning and maybe a shift at the firehouse the next night. He was tireless and most happy when doing for others.

Certainly, this is a time when we�ve come to have a heightened appreciation for those who are firefighters or EMS workers. John may not have lost his life helping others. But he certainly gave his life in that pursuit. I�m proud to have known him.
