Fairy tales and family fun with the Brooklyn Repertory
Opera!

This Holiday season, join the Brooklyn Repertory Opera as
they present 3 short works, Prokoviev’s “Peter and the
Wolf”, Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll” and Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne
Suite No. 1”, conducted by Christopher Fecteau. There are
two performances, December 20- 21st at 4 PM at the Brooklyn
Lyceum Theatre in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

“Peter and the Wolf” is aimed at children and adults who are
young at heart. The story is one that is easy to follow and
keeps the viewers in anticipation until a surprise ending.
There are several musical themes throughout that identify
the characters in the performance. There are 9 musical
characters, including Violin (Peter), Flute (the Bird), Oboe
(the Duck), Clarinet (the Cat), French Horn (the Wolf),
Bassoon (the Grandfather), and Kettle Drum (the Hunters).
The narration will be done by Brooklyn Repertory’s own Jay
Gould and Francis Liska.

Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll", was written as a Christmas
morning serenade for the composer's wife just after the
birth of their son in 1870. In tandem, Wagner was also
working on his opera of the same title so a lot of his
themes overlapped with the serenade, for example a horn-call
from Siegfried, and the flute and clarinet imitate a bird in
the forest scene.

Bizet’s "L’Arlesinne" suite opens with a strong, energetic
theme, which is based on the Christmas carol "March of the
Kings", played by the entire orchestra. Afterwards, the
theme is repeated by various sections. After reaching a
climax, the theme fades away. It is followed by the theme
associated with L'Innocent (the brother of Frédéri, the
hero). The Prélude concludes with the theme associated with
Frédéri himself. The second movement, resembles a minuet,
while the third is more emotional and muted. The last
movement, Carillon, features a repeating Bell-tone pattern
on the Horns, mimicking a peal of church bells.

Tickets for Peter and the Wolf are $10 and can be purchased
on-line or at the door. Group rates are also available.
Brooklyn Lyceum is located at 227 4th Ave, Brooklyn, New
York (located on the corner of Union and 4th avenue). It is
accessible to the R Subway at the Union Street stop. For
reservations or more information, call (866) 469-2687 or
