Phaedrus and I were experimenting with this today and the dwarf has to not just be outside the inner flame but be in the outer section of the orb to reliably not blow himself up. The inner section is brighter and the outer section is dimmer.

It looks like it'd be a good idea to have a single player dedicated to handling just the general, dwarfs and journeyman so they're able to concentrate on CBing and healing.
