Subject: Shining Stars/Please C/I from Teri
I have read everything that is on the bash board. 1st of all, I do know that the girl you are talking about that is in the 7-9, and you thought that is 10, is Not. She is 9 years old. Also, the girl that was in the 2-3, and was tall, is Not 4, she is 3.
Also, some of the dresses that some of you think that are glitz, were not. Scott and I personally looked at a couple of the dresses on Friday night, and even though they shined in the light, they are not glitz. They had some little colored beading on them, there were not tons of rhinestones. I even went on a website and found one of the dresses, and it was an off the rack dress, not a custom made, one of a kind dress. There was no big rhinestone on the dresses that we inspected. You can buy similar dresses like these in JcPennnys, Debs, etc. I even talked to the photographer yesterday and we went through all the Beauty photos together. None of the dresses were glitz, just lots of sparkle.
Even though I was in the ballroom the whole time, unfortunately, I was not able to watch much of the pageant. I was in the back of the room, facing a different way, adding up scores. It takes hours to add up scores, and with only having a one day pageant, I can not stop to watch competition too much. I have always said that if there is a concern about something, let me know right then and there, How is a director supposed to fix something, if its not right, if she doesn't know about it. I was confronted about the girl that you thought was 10, and I let them know that she is 9. No-one asked me about the casual wear and no-one told me to look at a contestants nails. If you would have came up to me as soon as you saw it, then I would have looked in the matter right away. Yes, there was many girls from different states, and were not well know. But, this is a natural pageant, and personality does count a lot. Contestants have their good days and their bad ones. Unfortunitly, one of the judges was a low ball judge. There is nothing that I could have done about it as I was so busy adding up scores and trying to pull the winners. We are not having anymore One day pageants so that I will have more time to go over ever score from each judge.
A parent should not think that their daughter is always going to win. What does that instill in your child's mind, that they have to win at everything or they are not a winner at all?
I believe that all contestants should feel good about themselves, win or loose. If they do their best and they show the personality that is all that should matter, It is hard to get in front of the judges and be judged. I have competed at pageants before myself. Unless you have been in front of panel of judges, then it hard to imagine how it feels. You should encourage your child, and praise her in however she does, No-matter the outcome. If you are mad and showing that in front of your child and throwing a fit about things. that does not show your child good morals. A pageant should be a good self-esteem booster, not something that a parent takes away from them. A pageant should help your child grow in life as well as having fun and meeting new friends from all over the United States. We all want to win, but we know that that is not possible. In my pageant, everyone receives a gift, crown, and trophy. I know for a fact that you can go to several pageants spend thousands of dollars and walk away with Nothing. We have done that with our daughter. I give a lot away so that the contestants always feel like winners. If they don't, then maybe it is what they hear from their own family members.
I felt that the pageant went well. If you want to compete in a future pageant of ours, then that is great. If you don't think that I am a fair person, then you have the choice to never compete again. It is all up to you. I think that people that have issues with a director should let the director know right away. On pageant weekends, I am lucky if I get 3-4 hours asleep in 3 days..
I hope to see you at future Shining Stars Pageants. If not, then good luck in what ever your contestant does in life.
Thank you,
Teri
Shining Stars Director
Congratulations to ALL the contestants whether you won a title or not. You are All winners in my eyes!!

I haven't done a SS pageant, but would definitly consider it. I have been referred to it by many people. I think the good outweighs the bad even if you believe what is being said. Teri~ I don't know you but just the way you stuck up for yourself and your system says a lot to me.

Hi. Kim here, Jelly's mom, I'm assumeing you are talking about me. I'm not on here bitching about my issues with this pageant. However, now that you mention it, I did have issues.
I know jelly did not do *fantastic* she was up there being goofy. It was her first time up there alone. We are takeing the necessery steps to keep this from happening again, we are going to work with a coach. Jelly walked out with a crown and some toys and candy. She has no clue she didn't "win".
Also, I don't think Teri is a bad person and I don't hate her pageant. Stop putting words in other people's mouths.

I think Teri and Scott put on a great pageant for the kids. I personally like the fact that each girl wins something. I think the girls work really hard to prepare for the pageants. I think Teri is a fair judge and director. I wans't sure if I should have my daughter in the Nationals because she didnt place at States, Teri helped me decide to try again and we did. I would do another pageant with Teri and Scott again!

Teri & Scott have always been in it for the kids and are fair directors. -- Anonymous, 05:46:47 10/21/09 Wed [1]
When Kayleigh was a queen for them, she was treated like one! Their gifts are way beyond what you usually get, and they try to make all the kids feel special. Beleive me, we have been to a ton of pageants - state and national - in our time, and there are many that are not fair and just as many that you can walk out shaking your head about the outcome. But, when you are basing it on 2-3 judges opinions, that is just what you get. Those people's opinions. The saying "Different judges, different outcome" is so true! Everyone just needs to put this in perspective. I know that the dress we use for natural is very sparkly, but it is directly off the rack. If we had been there, I suppose we would be one that was being put down for using a semi-glitz dress, but it actually does not have even one rhinestone on it! Natural does not need to be plain, nor should kids with routines be put down. When it comes to talent, unfortunately pageant judges are not always the best talent judges. They are usually not well versed in all the different disciplines of performing arts and that is why you get the outcomes that you do. Anyway, these directors are great people and I don't think they deserve the backlash that they are getting.
