Subject: Brazilian Elections

Dear Editor,

After reading several articles about the Brazilian election, I have found many similarities between a typical American election and a Brazilian election, such as the voting ages and scandals. I feel that America and Brazil can learn a lot from each other in regards to these elections. First off, Brazil’s voting is mandatory, and if America reinforced the need to vote to those 18 and up, the candidates would have to work harder to cater to all age groups. Lula has done a good job of catering to the majority of voters by reaching out to lower-income families and identifying with the working class because he is a prime example of the classic “rags-to-riches” man. In regards to scandals, American elections are greatly comprised of scandals and ‘he said, she saids.’ Although Lula was slapped with many scandal claims, he was smart to separate himself from the media claims; he even fired some of his employees in the interest of a solid and ethical campaign and reputation. Also, both American and Brazilian elections were tainted with bribes, buying of votes, and the never-ending tactic to make the opponent look bad. If candidates everywhere can stick to their own stands, their campaigns will be strengthened with fairness, and their true aim should be to gain votes based on their points, not based on the follies of the opponents. All in all, if Brazil and America can learn from each other from past mistakes, the elections will be better if voters’ needs are taken into consideration, as opposed to scandals and foul play.
