Subject: Brazilian Elections

To whom it may concern:

I am writing regarding the article Brazilian Election Playing out Downtown by Liz Mineo. I just wanted to state that I really like the idea of Brazilians voting for their presidential elections from overseas. I understand that foreigners, once moved, still have a devotion to their country. Brazilians are required to vote in their country, and if they choose not to vote, they are charged a fee of $1.00 (Mineo 1). If I were to move overseas, I would still participate in the annual elections and if possible, obtain an absentee ballot and mail it to the state in which I reside. I am very accepting of foreigners living in the United States. The whole point of North America having the name “United States” is to show that we are a diverse community. The one thing, however, that I have trouble with is when the foreigners move to North America and conform to how the Americas live and take up the American lifestyle.
Liz Mineo stated in her article that, “Brazilians in the United States send $6 billion to Brazil every year…More than votes, the Brazilian government wants that money.” I believe foreigners should still hold fast to the same duties they had in their country of birth after moving to North America. It is a great idea to allow Brazilians to still vote, no matter where they live. People should want to make the best of what could come of their country, resulting in the government of Brazil receiving the voter ballots. Sure, life may be “free” but, for the sake of morality, I will always vote, just because I feel my vote (although it is just one vote) may affect the outcome of my country.

Thank you for your time,
