Re: Poll: Brazil’s president headed to first round re-election despite scandal

Dear Editor,

Politician or not, the definition of a crime is the same for everyone. The article from the Associated Press, published September 26, 2006, stated that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil had allegations against him stating that he purchased a dossier for 1.7 reals. This specific dossier held information that could jeopardize fellow politicians. But, where did this money come from? And how did the money enter the country? No one can answer these questions (Associated Press). I strongly agree that Silva should pay for the consequences if proven guilty. I believe that purchasing a dossier with private information to make him look better as a politician is immoral. There was no reason for the president to commit slander against his opponent, since this specific article stated that Silva would have won the first round of elections. Therefore, no matter who you are, if there are judgmental questions on the behavior of a candidate and then later found guilty on the charges, justice should prevail.

Best Wishes,

Nadia Ouellette
