Subject: Brazilian Elections

Dear Editor,

After reading several articles, I feel the Brazilian elections are being overshadowed by alleged scandals of the current president, rather than other important issues. In order to be a well-educated voter, one must be aware of all sides of an issue as well as the plans of action for each candidate. It also seems strange to me that almost all of the focus is on Silva but not Alckmin, the other strong competitor. You cannot tell me that Alckmin has an entirely clean slate either, especially since he was a politician before. Why else would the Workers' Party be charged with purchasing a dossier containing damaging information about him? This makes me wonder if Brazil's entire political system is corrupt. Could all of this negativity directed at Silva be because he is the first leftist president?

Although Silva may have been involved in scandals, he was able to distance himself from them. The people that needed to be replaced were, and others stepped down. He was able to turn around the economy and institute better and more social programs. I believe with power comes corruption, it is inevitable. It is the only way to stay in power in today's world, whether it be politics or capitalism. In spite of everything Silva may have done, I think it would be great for the country if he was re-elected. Everything can be summed up in one of his quotes, "the people are more intelligent than the political class and will deliver the verdict at the polls."
