Brazil's leader forced into run-off election

Dear editor,

Congratulations on your article about the present political situatuion in Brazil. It is true that Mr. Da Silva and his leftist workers' Party won a landslide victory in a runoff four years ago but fell short of the majority he needed to avoid a another runoff on oct.29. This time though it will be much tougher! As you yourself pointed out, the erruption of the so-called Dossiergate scandal was the last drop although Mr. Da Silva has claimed over and over again that he did not know about the skullduggery of his Party´s operatives. Jubilant Mr. Alckmin, Da Silva´s strongest opponent, rose 10 points in the polls after the dossier scandal broke. MR. Alckmin strongly believes that "ethics will defeat coruption" but what he and his center-right Party seem to have forgotten is their past. A past marked by the similar misdoings, mismanagement and misleadings while in power. It seems that we are caught in a trap. Since voting is mandatory in Brazil, we are forced to choose between two paths that are notoriously known for poor management of the economy and the incapacity to see to our basic and most urgent needs.

yours,

Lincoln Rondas.
