Dear Editor,

It is not difficult to see why President Lula has the majority of his support from the lower class. Many of the programs that he has instituted since he first took office in 2002 have benefited this particular class. One such program provides cash to poor families who agree to keep their children in school. The obvious benefits of this program include keeping children busy and out of trouble and educating them in order to give them a more successful future. Another advantage to this program is that by providing these families with incentives, their children do not need to leave school at a young age in order to work and help support their household. President Lula has also dramatically raised the minimum wage during his time in office, which has helped him gain support from the working class. Furthermore, President Lula was born into a large, poor family, making him more relatable to a considerable amount of people in the poorer regions of the country.

Many of President Lula’s programs have not really benefited the middle and upper classes of Brazil, who believe that the economy has suffered greatly since he began his term. Interest rates have risen to double digits, which has caused many people to lose their jobs. Lula has also failed to address banking and social security reforms that these groups feel are dire to the success of the economy.

Despite all of this, the working class still accounts for most of the population in Brazil. Although President Lula does not have the support of the majority of the middle and upper classes, he will continue to experience success in office as long as he maintains the support of the majority of the country.
