Subject: Brazilian Elections

Dear Editor:

In the upcoming Brazilian elections, da Silva and Alckmin are the candidates. I believe da Silva is a better candidate for president because of his contribution to the country.

First of all, da Silva was born from a peasant family of eight. (Rohter) In order to become president, da Silva had to work hard for the title. He raised his status from living as a peasant to leading Brazil as president for the last four years; He earned his presidency. Therefore, he truly understands how the people of Brazil live: he understands the obstacles of the poor, he knows the amount of hard work from a middle class family, he respects the citizens of Brazil because he was one of them: "He's the first president with the soul of the people, who looks like us" (Rohter)

Da Silva is a better candidate also because “of his support for social programs.” (Rohter) During his presidency, he tried to make living for the poor easier. He offered many welfare programs for the poor making them more easily accessible than the previous government. Da Silva also helped with rural electrification and installed water storage tanks around Brazil.

Granted, I only know the one side of the story. I do not know the accomplishments of Alckmin nor do I know his vision for Brazil. My point, however, is that da Silva accomplished much in these last four years and Brazilians should not take a risk with a new president – they should stick to the one they are comfortable with. Therefore, I believe da Silva is a better candidate for President of Brazil.

Sincerely,
Fatima Younus
