Well, you wrote "You cannot tell me that Alckmin has an entirely clean slate either, especially since he was a politician before", at least he has got the benefit of the doubt.
"This makes me wonder if Brazil's entire political system is corrupt", yes, probably.
"Could all of this negativity directed at Silva be because he is the first leftist president?", well, Lula WAS leftist just until he won the elections 4 years ago. He was Brazilians' last resort, and now he's just a reason for shame.
"In spite of everything Silva may have done, I think it would be great for the country if he was re-elected", yes, sure, for him to keep on stealing our money, being a mensalist and a sanguessuga.
"the people are more intelligent than the political class and will deliver the verdict at the polls", anyone in Brazil with a minimum of intelligence will open his/her eyes and understand that crimes are not to be forgiven so easily. Especially if comitted by the nation's president.
