Dear Carine,

I think that you gave this young lady very good advice. Parents become afraid naturally when their child becomes more independent and wants to do things and go places on their own. Before, her mom was probably so used to being with her and letting go for some parents is more difficult than others. This does not mean her mom doesn't love her, in fact it means the complete opposite. I think you were absolutley right when you said that her mom has the best interest in looking out for her and only wants to protect her. Teens going through their rebellious stage and independent stage do not see parents as trying to help though. I know that I fought with my dad a lot, but I look at it and think to myself all of the times I thought he was being controlling he was really just looking out for me. Hopefully things get better between her and her mother.
