Subject: High School Pressures of Smoking

On the Issue of High School Pressures and Avoiding Smoking:

High school life was probably the most tribulating time any of us will ever go through. Busy enough with trying to pull off good grades one also has to find time to define who they are; create their identity. I know from experience that these times are rough but with strong perseverance you can manage your time to get your work done and hang out with your friends in a productive manner (the key work being productive). Now there are always going to be problems that come up, your friends going through some though times at home or maybe some of your people are getting mixed up in the wrong type of business, but if you are willing to seek some good advice and utilize it then everything is likely to turn out for the best.
Now, if you are getting pressured to try something that you feel would be harmful (whether it be smoking or dope or some stupid stunt) then you need to reach deep down inside yourself and find the strength and courage to say “NO!” Personally smoking was a big pressure put on me by my friends; everyone was doing it. I knew smoking was wrong; I had seen all the public service announcements on television describing all the ills of smoking, the yellow teeth, the horrible breath, the nasty stink on your clothing not to mention an enormously higher risk of contracting cancer of the lung and mouth; but still I wanted to try it. Looking to my older brother for advice he gave what would turn out to be a great incentive not to smoke: he would beat me up. I was pretty sure he was just messing with me but I figured that trying a cigarette was not worth the risk of testing his limits. Sometimes it is the tough love that helps you the most so stick with those who really care for you and they will help make sure you stay out of trouble and I hope you have a productive high school career.
