I was there from Nov 65 until Feb 67 and to be honest it wasn't as bad as I feared when it was first announced "I am sending you to an approved school". Some of the staff were half decent-a couple, sadly, were bullying wankers of the highest order. Unfortunately I can't remember his real name but he was "Joe Soap" to the boys. Whatever his name is I have to thank him for taking an interest in getting me some qualifications-RSA's to the top level they'd permit Court Lees to participate in, and some CSE's. I remember him being supportive and very dedicated to helping us by teaching us as much as he could. He didn't suffer fools gladly though and if somebody couldn't be bothered to learn he quickly shipped them out to the other class.

Thankfully I don't seem to suffer like a number of others who were at Court Lees although I do regret not having more of a formal education instead of playing builders with Taffy Evans every afternoon when Maths, English and Science wuld have been more useful.

Some of the boys were good people-others were destined to become habitual criminals. The decent ones out-numbered the bad while I was there but some nights I couldn't sleep in fear of being beaten or raped by a couple of the maniacs we had to share a dorm with.

I bumped into Fidoe after the school was closed-he lived in Lancing, Sussex and I went into a pub that he was in. Bar steward actually recognised me and tried to be pleasant. Again, to be fair, I didn't have any run ins with him so to me he wasn't that bad-sadly we all saw the results of his canings on other boys which I'm sure was part of his plan: Rule by fear. I would never have absconded-I saw the mess he made of too many backsides.

I survived Court Lees :-)
