For the first time this year, the Cayman Islands will be sending a contestant to the Miss Earth pageant, a contest that focuses on environmental challenges around the world.

The pageant carries the motto “The protection and preservation of the environment” and is organised by Carousel Productions in the Philippines, where the pageant will be held on 26 November.

On an annual basis, the pageant draws 50 to 60 girls from all over the world and twenty-year-old Stephanie Espeut has been selected to represent Cayman in the pageant.

Stephanie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the international show, having been involved in pageantry for about 10 years.

She participated in different levels of the Miss Cinderella pageant, and won awards both locally and internationally.

She is a graduate of the John Gray High School and currently works at Digicel as a Customer Care Representative. Her life ambition is to become a successful Human Resource Consultant, teaching the young generation how to live a positive and successful life.

Presently in Bermuda training, Stephanie spoke to Cayman Net News, via telephone and said she is elated to be a contender in a pageant of such magnitude.

“It is such a magnificent experience…I cannot wait to meet with the others girls,” she said happily.
Stephanie expressed her love for the environment. “I have a passion for nature,” she said.

As an ambassador for her country, Stephanie will sing the national song during the talent night of the pageant.

Her costume is being designed by a professional Costume Designer from Canada.

Stephanie left the Cayman Islands on 3 November and during her stay in the Philippines she, along with the other candidates, will be participating in the usual pre-pageant activities such as National Costume, Gown, Swim suit and Talent Night competitions, as well as press conferences, courtesy calls, charity visits and most of all, environmental activities.

Pamela Small is the franchise holder for Miss Earth, in the Island, formerly Miss Cayman in 1992 and Miss Cayman International in 1995.

“I always wanted to do pageantry so I contacted Miss Earth and I got the approval to be the Director,” Ms Small said.

She has formed her own company called Island Talent Management and hosts her own local pageant dubbed Miss Universal Cayman Islands. She also formed a committee for her pageant.

She explained that the first pageant was scheduled for earlier this year but due to personal reasons and lack of sponsorship, it was not possible.

However there were a few businesses, namely UBS, Butterfield Bank, Admiral Administration and Tortuga, who supported the pageant.

“We used some of the funds given by these companies to send a representative to the pageant,” Ms Small said, sounding grateful.

According to her, Stephanie was chosen by the committee to participate in the pageant because of her experience and she showed the most interest.

Since there was no pageant this year, Stephanie is automatically Miss Universal Cayman Islands.
Next year she will give up her title to whoever captures the crown.

Asked what makes one eligible to participate, Ms Small said contestants must be Caymanian, between the ages of 18 and 26, minimum of 5’4 in height, never been married or given birth and to be of good moral character.

She indicated that the reason behind her involvement in the Miss Earth pageant is to focus on a crucial environmental issue, especially Cayman’s mangroves.

She noted that they are disappearing due to deforestation and this is of particular concern to an island vulnerable to hurricanes.

“The mangroves help in protecting us from flooding during hurricanes and also in preserving and replenishing the underwater life,” she said.

Ms Small’s dream is to open a training academy to prepare young women for the international stage.
“We want our girls to not only go to Miss Earth but to win it,” Ms Small said adding that she is also looking into buying the rights for the pageant so that it could be aired in the Island but she stated that it is rather expensive to do so. Cayman Net News, Cayman Islands, 04.11.06
