KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s home-grown international beauty pageant – Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International – will provide a glamorous end to the year, with 43 beauty queens from around the globe vying for the coveted crown. President and franchise-owner of the pageant Datuk Danny Ooi said the event, now in its 13th year, had been globally recognised as a premier international beauty showcase.

Aptly themed “Bringing the World to Malaysia”, its world finals will be staged on Dec 30 at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre.

The contestants will be invited to take part in a two-week long programme that will coincide with the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

“We are proud to have it on the international pageantry map. Not just that, it is also a timely event to usher in Visit Malaysia Year 2007,” said Ooi.

“It has always been our Government’s aim to present Malaysia as a leading tourist destination. With this pageant we are confident of attracting tourists from all corners of the world.”

More than 60 countries now subscribe to the pageant, which started in 1993.

“The pageant serves as an educational and promotional platform for the beauty queens to learn about Malaysia and, at the same time, encourage cultural exchanges among themselves and those they come in contact with,” Ooi said, adding that the pageant would draw global interest from the electronic and print media.

Malaysian aspirant 24-year-old Constance Lau Chia Li said: “This is a very competitive pageant. The girls are all very bright and beautiful. I will give my best and, hopefully, win the title.”

Lau, who wants to be a journalist, added: “It has been a fun and exciting experience so far. The girls are all very friendly and it is a good opportunity to explore other cultures and to make new friends.”
